Our Progress to Africa

After one night in Licata at anchor in the harbor, we motored up to Empodocle where two years ago we anchored in the harbor and were charmed by this grubby, working town.  Were were looking forward to revisiting the friendly people and low prices on everything.

Unfortunately, anchoring is now prohibited in the harbor due to the Italian navy requiring its exclusive use.  We were directed to the seedy marina in the inner harbor, but they wanted 40€ per night with nothing included, so we left.

There is a tight, unfinished harbor to the east that we anchored in and stayed for three days. It is protected from everything except southerlies.  You have to dinghy back around to the inner harbor if you want to go ashore unless you want to venture onto the large breakwater boulders, which we did to get some fuel in jerry cans.

Today we motored up to Sciacca hoping to make our way along the coast to get a better angle for the crossing to Africa. It looks like we might get a chance to get to Pantelleria tomorrow morning.  It is only a 60 NM. run from here and directly in line towards Monastir.

The coastline from Empodocle to Sciacca is spectacular and we have definitely scouted some spots to visit next winter when we return to Marina di Ragusa.
